50 Years Ago Today…

Good day to all! Our temps have moderated somewhat but we still have that Amazon Basin humidity, which while it’s 77-degrees,

still makes for “sticky-pits”, among other frictionalizing body areas.

mlk

A couple notes before we begin. Let’s all hold a good thought for our LeftCoasters, Bill and Cathie who are in The Bay Area, which according to news reports is having its power and water supplies threatened by that wildfire, which is sposetabe the size of ChiTown.

As I have several things to do on FEEL-GOOD FRIDAY, I may not post until later in the day.

Also, today is some kind of landmark, I think. It will mark my last posting whilst I am able to deny that I am an Old Fart. The reason is at Midnight, my dear Twackers, it becomes official and I leave my Paul McCartney year to begin my foray in to Old Fartdom. Also, Elliott Gould becomes 75, as does Twacker Buck; along with “Mr. I-wear-a-glove-on-one-hand-for-no-apparent-reason”, Michael Jackson would be 55; and is celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church as the Commemoration of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist, which according to Twacker Bill, entitles us all to a stripper, a la Salome. Which I am now excused if I’m late, as, well, I’ll be an Old Fart.

OK, let’s see what happened “Yesterday and Today” according historynet.com in…

1626,   The Catholic League crushed the Danes in Germany, which led the Danes to stay out of European wars and concentrate on their strengths…prune and cheese Danish.

1793,   Robespierre was elected top the Committee of Public Safety in Paris, which led to a much safer Paris. Nothing to lose your head over, though.

1894,   Congress passed an income tax as part of a tariff act, which was eventually found to have been unconstitutional. Hmmmm.

1984,   President Ronald Reagan announced the NASA Teacher in Space Project, designed to get kids interested in science, math and space exploration. Nothing about Intelligent Design, though.

AND TODAY…

1749,   Johann Goethe was born, which led to the most mispronounced street-name, i.e., “Go-Thee”, in ChiTown.

1963,   Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., gave his “I Have A Dream” speech.

1968,   Antiwar protestors clashed with ChiTown coppers in Grant Park while the Democratic National Convention was in progress.

A personal note on this. My Dad was “Class of ’46″, which meant he didn’t agree with what folks my/our age were saying. That is until the cameras caught a cop take his billy-club and whack a kid across the head. My dad said, “That kid wasn’t doing anything wrong!” “What the hell did he have to go and do that for?” It didn’t matter whether there was provocation or not. It was the realization that one of his kids could have received the same treatment for doing nothing. From that day forward, his outlook had changed. It was the clincher which topped Walter Cronkite’s report that Vietnam was BS and an unwinnable war from earlier in the year.

2005,   Hurricane Katrina reached Category 5 strength. Not zackly good news for Dub.

2012,   In another blow to the GOP, Willard Mitt Romney was nominated as their Presidential candidate. One comment on that. Had he run as the former Guvster of Massatoosits, he very well may have been President Romney, today.

DROMEDARY SEASON

OH, RAHMIE!

-Here’s an item from yesterday’s S-T by Twacker Brewski’s old schoolmate from Von Steuben H.S., Fran Spielman. She’s saying much as you’ve read here, previously. This guy better hope none of those kids on his “Safe Passage” routes ever gets hurt.

http://www.suntimes.com/news/cityhall/22176750-418/analysis-as-chicago-public-schools-open-the-mayor-has-his-own-rite-of-passage.html

-Here’s another which involves MBH’s school: http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/22190391-418/students-sweat-it-out-in-classrooms-without-air-conditioning.html

Ya can’t beat a longer school year. There actually may have been a good reason for Chicago kids not starting school till the Wednesday after Labor Day, besides the traditional bringing in of the crops from days gone by.

SOMETHING SERIOUS ON SYRIA.

-OK, something needs to be done. No, I am not a cold-hearted bastard who wants innocents to be gassed by a tyrant to go unpunished. However, in looking back, our beloved country has a disturbing record as far as backing the wrong folks around the world…no matter which party was in power. We take a few whacks at their whack-job of a leader, fine. But who’s the opposition? Are any of them friendly towards us? From what I have read and heard, there’s no real, organization to Assad’s opposition, other than they want him the hell out. Some are with Hezzbollah, not zackly pals of ours. By doing this , are we paving the exit for Assad and at the same time, opening a power-vacuum to be filled by an even worse enemy?

I see this as a damned-if-we-do/damned-if-we-don’t situation. And because of that, no GIs on the ground. I had these thoughts before I’d heard anything on the news. Use AirLaunchedCruiseMissiles or SeaLaunchedCruiseMisiles; smart bombs from B-2s or even B-52s if they can get within range with the least danger to them; but no American ground troops. We’ve had too, too much war for far too, too long. Some of you have kids who are “in”. There are enough “hot spots” around the world without our sticking our toes into another, to bring their lives into jeopardy.

SOME S-T HEADLINES SANS COMMENT…

“Ex-GOP chief to lobby for same-sex marriage”.

“Demolition day for iconic Purple Hotel”.

“Rahm pleads with parents: Don’t boycott school today”.

“Wal-Mart extending benefits to same-sex couples”

“Man’s body found in jilted girlfriend’s freezer”

DUCK SEASON

TUBULARLY SPEAKING…

-Watched DVR’d shows, “The Newsroom” and “Ray Donovan”, last night.

“Newsroom” was OK through the body of the episode but got a bit heavy with the treacle at its end with Hanoi Jane delivering quite a soliloquy. Haftasay, still can’t stand her politics but, man, she sure looks great for being 76! Course it can’t hurt to have been married to a billionaire to take some of life’s stresses out of hers.

“Ray Donovan” is about as dark a story as I have seen…on the tube; the big-screen; even some novels. Also, I was able to predict two, very consequential occurrences  to the story. That said, three-episodes left and I will watch them all.

-We’re going to view this week’s “Under the Dome” episode, tonight. I understand much is revealed in this show, so am looking forward to it.

-”OH, WE GOT TROUBLE! RIGHT HERE IN RIVER CITY! AND THAT STARTS WITH ‘T’ AND THAT RHYMES WITH ‘P’ AND THAT STANDS FOR POOL!”

TCM, Hanoi Jane’s old hubby’s network, is showing “The Music Man”, tonight.

WARNING!

-There’s a restaurant at the intersection of Irving Park Road and Central Avenue which all y’all ChiTowners need to be made aware of.

It seems a friend was there who saw another patron take their spoon; dip it into the bowl of salsa; lick it and then put it back into the bowl. OK, some cultures aren’t as torqued up as others when it comes to that. BUT, the kicker is this. When those folks finished and left, the waitress took that bowl of salsa; scraped what was left in it into a new, clean serving-bowl and placed THAT bowl back on the table.

You have been caveated.

AND NOW…SPORT

WHISKEY-TANGO-FOXTROT, OR, DOES EVEN A BLIND SQUIRREL OCCASIONALLY FIND AN ACORN?

-This should be filed under one of the above in that DaFlubs beat Da Doyers and Clayton Kershaw, 2-1, IN L.A.! Not going much more with that as they’ll revert to form.

-So much has been said about the TheoJed “Secret Plan to End the Flubs World Series Drought”, which should give us all pause. I say that as, well, haven’t we seen this one before?

No?

Hot Chop Suey?

Bobby Hill?

Felix Pie?

Danny Murphy?

Gary Scott?

Adolpho Phillips?

What I’m getting at is…and you know what it is…there is abso-effin-lutely no guarantee Soler, Baez, et al, will be as good as advertised…and even if they are that they’ll last longer than their last phenom, Mark Pryor or be better than Corey Patterson.

Lately, they’ve amended their spiel to lean more towards 2015…or later…for our team’s metamorphosis; breaking their chrysalis

and bursting forth as a for-real contender. Pshaw.

GO, YOU WHITE SOX!

-After losing to the As-stro-holes, 10-8, Monday, they came back with a 4-3 win, yesterday.

THE SOCIALIST FOOTBALL COMMUNE.

-Here’s Hub Arkush’s outlook for DaBears. It applies to Da Packehs, as well. For our out-of-towners, Hub is the publisher of “Pro Football Weekly”, with which you may be familiar.

THE MGM GRAND SPORTS BOOK’S ODDS AS OF 8/12/13

-Thought all y’all might find the odds for reaching and winning the Super Bowl for our teams, i.e., Bears, Packers, Niners, Jets.

NFC CHAMPIONSHIP:

Niners, 5/2; Packehs, 4/1; Bears, 7/1.

AFC CHAMPIONS, Jets, 50/1

SUPER BOWL:

Niners, 11/2; Packehs, 8/1; Bears, 15/1; Jets, 100/1.

Nothing personal on these, guys. If I missed anyone’s fave team, let me know and I’ll give you the odds. I tried to find them published on the net but couldn’t. But I am that blind-squirrel when it comes to searching the net.

One observation on the Jets. They need to blow it up and start all over again. The sooner they get rid of their Peter Principle reaching head coach, the better off they’ll be. I have no animus towards them…only NFL Network’s and ESPN’s seeming, constant, fawning over them. Otherwise, thanks to “Super Joe” Namath, I had quite a nice payday when he led them to victory over the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III.

BFW FOOTBALL IS BACK. SIGN UP ASAP, AS WE BEGIN A WEEK FROM TOMORROW! (see the post below)

OK, time to go.

Please remember that any day we can look down at a daisy instead of up at its roots is a good one.

HaGooDay,

DaBigFatWat
